Search for almost any question on Google and, somewhere on the page, you will see a box of related questions labelled “People also ask”. Tap one and it opens to show a short answer taken from a web page, with a link to the source. Tap another and more questions appear. For many informational searches, this box sits higher on the page than most of the classic blue links.

People also ask optimisation is the practice of earning those answer spots. It is also one of the most practical starting points for answer engine optimisation (AEO), because the habits that get a page chosen for a People Also Ask answer are the same ones that help it be quoted in AI Overviews and AI assistants. This playbook explains how the feature works, how to find the questions that matter to your customers, how to write answers that can be lifted, how to measure progress and what to avoid.

What People Also Ask is and how it works

People Also Ask (PAA) is a Google search feature that shows questions related to the original search. Each question expands to reveal an answer drawn from a web page, usually with the page title and a link. Opening one question often adds more related questions to the list, so the box can keep growing as someone explores a topic.

Google’s Search Central page on featured snippets says featured snippets can appear within a related questions group, also known as People Also Ask. In practice, then, a PAA answer is a featured-snippet-style extract from your page. The same page explains that Google’s systems decide whether a page would make a good featured snippet; there is no markup you can add to request one. You can opt out with the nosnippet rule, but there is no opt-in.

The questions shown vary with the query, the searcher’s location and language, the device and over time. Treat any one view of the box as a sample, not a fixed list.

Why People Also Ask matters for AEO in 2026

There are three reasons we think PAA deserves a place in your search plan:

  • It shows real question demand. The questions Google chooses to show are a useful, free window into how people frame a topic, including the follow-up questions they ask next.
  • It rewards the same skills as AI answers. Google’s guidance on AI features and your website says that to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet, and that no special optimisation is needed beyond normal SEO best practice. Clear, well-structured answers help in both places.
  • It builds recognition before the click. Even when a searcher reads your answer without visiting, your brand appears as the source of a credible answer. That has value, although it is harder to measure.

The trade-off is that some searchers get what they need from the answer box and never click. We cover how to plan for that in our guide to zero-click search, and the wider relationship between the two disciplines in AEO vs SEO.

People Also Ask compared with other answer surfaces

PAA is one of several places where your content can be shown as an answer. The table summarises how they differ, based on Google’s documentation and our own observation of results pages.

Finding the questions your customers actually ask

Good PAA work starts with the right questions, not with the PAA box itself. Combine several sources:

  • Your own conversations. WhatsApp chats, enquiry emails, sales calls and front-desk notes are the richest source. Write down the exact wording customers use, including Singlish, abbreviations and mixed-language phrasing.
  • Search Console. In the performance report, filter queries using a regular expression that matches question words such as how, what, why, when, which, can, is and does. These are questions you already appear for.
  • The results pages. Search your main topics on a phone in Singapore and note the PAA questions, then open a few to see which follow-ups appear. Repeat in a private window, as results vary.
  • Autocomplete and related searches. Google’s suggestions and the related searches at the bottom of the page show common phrasings.
  • Industry and regulatory sources. For regulated topics, questions often follow official rules, such as PDPA consent, MOM work pass conditions or IRAS deadlines.

Group the questions by topic and by stage of the customer journey: early research (“what is”), comparison (“which is better”, “vs”), cost (“how much”), process (“how long”, “what happens”) and trust (“is it safe”, “is it legal”). Our introduction to keyword research explains how to prioritise them.

Writing answers that can be lifted into People Also Ask

Put the question where it belongs

Use the question, or a natural version of it, as a heading on the page that best answers it. Do not cram dozens of unrelated questions onto one page; each page should answer a coherent set of closely related questions.

Lead with a direct answer

Immediately under the heading, answer the question in a sentence or two that would make sense on its own, without the heading for context. Then expand with detail, conditions and examples. Google does not publish a required length for featured snippets, so focus on being complete and clear rather than hitting a word count.

Choose the format that fits the question

  • Definitions and yes-or-no questions: a short paragraph that answers first and qualifies second.
  • Processes: a numbered list of steps in order.
  • Options or criteria: a bulleted list.
  • Comparisons and prices: a simple table with clear column headings.

Be specific and current

Generic answers are easy to replace. Add the details that make your answer genuinely useful in Singapore: typical timeframes, the factors that change a price, the relevant regulation, what a customer should prepare. Avoid stating figures you cannot support. Where facts change, such as fees, rules or deadlines, review the page regularly and show when it was last updated.

Write for people first

Google’s guidance on helpful, people-first content asks whether content provides original information, analysis or insight and whether a reader would leave feeling they learned enough. A page written only to capture snippets, with thin answers and no depth, is unlikely to satisfy either readers or Google’s systems.

Technical basics and structured data

PAA answers can only come from pages Google can crawl, index and show with a snippet. Check that key pages are indexed in Search Console, are not blocked by robots.txt or a noindex rule, and do not carry nosnippet or very restrictive max-snippet settings unless you intend them.

FAQ markup is often misunderstood. There is no structured data that places a page in People Also Ask. Google restricted FAQ rich results to well-known government and health websites in 2023, and its Search documentation updates record that FAQ rich results stopped appearing in Google Search from May 2026, so FAQPage markup no longer earns a special search appearance on Google. If you do use any structured data, follow Google’s general structured data guidelines: mark up only content that is visible on the page.

Plain HTML headings, paragraphs, lists and tables matter more. Make sure the answer text is in the page itself, not hidden in images, tabs that load only on click, or scripts that crawlers may not render.

The People Also Ask playbook: a 10-week plan

This plan suits a small team that publishes regularly. Adjust the pace to your capacity.

  1. Week 1 – Collect questions (owner: marketing lead with sales or front desk). Pull 30 to 50 real questions from customer conversations, Search Console and results pages.
  2. Week 1 – Prioritise (owner: marketing lead). Score each question by relevance to what you sell and by how often it comes up. Pick the top 10 to 15.
  3. Week 2 – Map questions to pages (owner: SEO or marketing lead). Assign each question to the existing page that should answer it, or plan a new page where no suitable one exists. Avoid creating competing pages for the same question.
  4. Weeks 2–3 – Record a baseline (owner: SEO). Note which PAA questions currently show for your main topics, who is cited, and your impressions and clicks for question queries in Search Console.
  5. Weeks 3–6 – Write or rewrite answers (owner: writer with a subject expert). Add question headings, direct answers and supporting detail. Have someone with real expertise check each answer for accuracy.
  6. Weeks 4–6 – Fix technical blockers (owner: web developer). Confirm pages are indexed and snippet-eligible, and that answers are in crawlable HTML.
  7. Weeks 6–7 – Link the cluster together (owner: marketing lead). Link related question pages to each other and to the relevant service page, so readers and crawlers can follow the topic.
  8. Weeks 8–10 – Review (owner: SEO and business owner). Recheck the results pages and Search Console against your baseline, note which answers are cited and which enquiries mention the topics, and choose the next set of questions.

Measuring People Also Ask and answer visibility

Measurement is the hardest part. Search Console does not report PAA appearances as a separate feature, so you need a mix of signals:

  • Impressions and clicks for question queries in Search Console, filtered with the same question-word expression you used for research.
  • Manual or tool-based checks of the results pages for your priority questions, recorded at the same time each month from a Singapore location.
  • Citations in AI answers for a fixed set of prompts, tracked over time and treated as directional rather than precise.
  • Business outcomes, such as enquiries that mention a topic you answered, or sales staff hearing that customers read your guide.

Our guide to measuring GEO performance covers metrics and tools for AI search visibility in more detail.

How AI can help with People Also Ask optimisation

AI tools can make the research and drafting stages much faster:

  • Clustering questions from exported chats, emails and Search Console data into themes.
  • Drafting direct answers for an expert to correct, expand and approve.
  • Checking coverage by comparing your pages against your question list to find gaps.
  • Tracking answer visibility across Google and AI assistants for a fixed set of prompts.

The limits matter more here than almost anywhere. An answer box rewards confident, concise statements, which is exactly where AI tools tend to state wrong facts most convincingly. Every answer should be checked by someone who knows the subject, and nothing should be published purely because a tool produced it.

Marketing2u’s AI GEO Agent tracks prompts across AI assistants and Google AI Overviews where configured, reporting mention and citation share without estimating what it cannot measure. The AI Content Agent can draft FAQ sections and pages with an editorial checklist of facts to verify, and drafts stay unpublished until a person approves them. Neither can promise a place in any answer box; no one can.

Common People Also Ask mistakes to avoid

  • Writing for the box instead of the reader. Thin, snippet-shaped answers with nothing behind them rarely hold their place and do little for your business.
  • One giant FAQ page. Dozens of unrelated questions on one page dilute relevance; answer questions where they naturally belong.
  • Burying the answer. Long introductions before the actual answer make it harder for both readers and Google to find.
  • Relying on FAQ markup. Structured data does not place a page in PAA, and marking up content that is not visible breaches Google’s guidelines.
  • Ignoring accuracy and freshness. Out-of-date fees, rules or timelines damage trust, especially on regulated topics.
  • Chasing every question. Questions unrelated to what you offer may bring impressions but no customers.

Bringing it together

People Also Ask optimisation is a practical, low-risk way to start with AEO. Find the real questions your customers ask, answer each one directly on the page where it belongs, support the answer with specific and accurate detail, and keep the page technically eligible to be shown. The same work improves your chances in featured snippets and AI answers, while making your site more useful to the people who do click.

A sensible next step is to collect 20 real customer questions this week and check how many your site answers clearly today. For the bigger picture on AI-generated results, read our guide to AI Overviews for Singapore businesses.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my website into People Also Ask?

You cannot request a spot, because Google chooses which pages to show. You improve your chances by answering real questions directly under clear question headings, adding specific and accurate detail, and making sure the page is indexed and allowed to show snippets. Pages that already rank well for related searches are more likely to be chosen.

Does FAQ schema help with People Also Ask?

No structured data places a page in People Also Ask. Google restricted FAQ rich results to well-known government and health sites in 2023 and stopped showing FAQ rich results in Google Search from May 2026, so FAQ markup will not earn a rich result there. Clear headings and direct answers in the visible page content matter far more.

Is People Also Ask the same as a featured snippet?

They are closely related. Google says featured snippets can appear within the related questions group known as People Also Ask, so each PAA answer is effectively a snippet-style extract from a web page. A featured snippet usually appears for the main query, while PAA answers relate to follow-up questions.

How long should a People Also Ask answer be?

Google does not publish a required length. A practical approach is to answer the question in a sentence or two that makes sense on its own, then add detail, conditions and examples underneath. Use a list or table when the question is about steps, options or comparisons.
