Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are changing how people explore complex questions, compare providers and move from research to action. For Singapore businesses, the sensible response is not to chase a secret “AI ranking factor.” It is to make the website easier to crawl, understand, trust and use.
Google’s own guidance says that the same SEO foundations used for conventional Search remain relevant for its generative AI features. There are no special AI files or exclusive schema types required for eligibility. A page must first be indexed, eligible to appear with a snippet and useful enough to support the searcher’s task.
What are Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews summarise information for searches where Google determines that an AI-generated response can add value. AI Mode supports broader exploration and comparisons. Both experiences can surface links to supporting websites, and the pages selected may differ from the pages shown in the traditional blue-link results.
Google explains that these features can use “query fan-out”: several related searches across subtopics and sources may contribute to one response. That makes coherent topic coverage useful, but it does not justify producing dozens of repetitive pages for every wording variation.
What Google says website owners should prioritise
1. Maintain normal technical SEO
Important pages should return a successful response, allow crawling, use clear canonical URLs and be internally linked. Indexability matters because a page cannot support an AI feature if it is not eligible for Google Search. Review robots directives, sitemaps, duplicate URLs, mobile rendering and page experience as part of the same technical programme.
2. Publish useful, non-commodity information
Generic summaries are easy to reproduce and difficult to distinguish. Stronger content adds first-hand knowledge, a clear point of view, practical examples, original research, accurate limitations or a process that reflects real experience. A Singapore agency might explain local buying considerations, show an anonymised campaign workflow or publish a case study with evidence and context.
3. Keep important information in readable text
Critical service details should not exist only inside images, videos or interactive widgets. Use descriptive headings, concise explanations, lists and comparison tables where they help readers. Images and videos can strengthen a page, but they should support rather than replace the core information.
4. Make structured data match the page
Structured data can clarify organizations, services, articles and other entities, but it must represent information that is genuinely visible on the page. Adding markup does not guarantee selection for an AI Overview. Incorrect or inflated schema can create inconsistency instead of authority.
5. Maintain consistent business information
For local businesses, accurate business details and a maintained Google Business Profile support both customers and search systems. Use the real business name, categories, operating information, services and contact routes. Our Google Business Profile Singapore guide explains the local fundamentals.
A practical AI visibility workflow
Step 1: Choose commercially relevant questions
Start with questions that influence a real decision. These might concern suitability, cost drivers, implementation steps, risks, comparisons or expected timelines. Separate informational curiosity from questions that naturally connect to your service and customer journey.
Step 2: Map each question to the right page
Do not create a new page when an existing service page can answer the question properly. Strengthen the primary page and support it with a focused guide only when the guide serves a distinct intent. Connect both pages with descriptive internal links. See Marketing2u’s dedicated AI SEO services, broader SEO services and content marketing services.
Step 3: Add evidence and decision support
Replace vague claims with useful proof. Appropriate evidence can include a documented method, screenshots with confidential data removed, verified credentials, real customer outcomes with context, author expertise or links to primary sources. Never fabricate reviews, certifications, results or clients.
Step 4: check technical eligibility
Confirm that the final URL is crawlable, indexable and self-canonical, then place it in the correct site hierarchy. Check that the page works on mobile, loads securely and presents the main answer without forcing users through intrusive elements.
Step 5: measure actions, not mentions alone
Google includes traffic from AI features within the Search Console Performance report under Web search. Combine that information with analytics and conversion events such as qualified form submissions, calls and WhatsApp clicks. Third-party AI visibility trackers can provide directional observations, but they should not replace Search Console, analytics or lead-quality evidence.
Common AI SEO mistakes
- Creating an llms.txt file and treating the job as finished: Google says no special AI text file is required for its Search AI features.
- Producing pages for every prompt variation: repetitive scaled content can reduce quality and may conflict with Google’s spam policies.
- Adding schema that is not visible on the page: markup should describe the actual content and business.
- Publishing unsupported claims: an AI-generated draft still needs fact checking, original value and editorial review.
- Tracking visibility without conversions: a mention has limited commercial value if it does not contribute to qualified engagement.
- Ignoring index pollution: unrelated or duplicate pages can confuse site purpose and consume attention that should support core services.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need special AI schema to appear in Google AI Overviews?
No. Google states that no special schema.org markup is required. Use relevant structured data accurately when it helps describe visible content.
Can an agency guarantee an AI Overview citation?
No. Google controls crawling, indexing, selection and presentation. SEO can improve eligibility and content quality but cannot guarantee inclusion.
Should AI-generated content be published without review?
No. AI can assist research and structure, but published content should be checked for accuracy, originality, usefulness, brand fit and appropriate sourcing.
